Centennial to millennial variability of greenhouse climate across the mid-Cenomanian event

چکیده

Abstract Centennial- to millennial-scale climate variations are often attributed solar forcing or internal system variability, but recognition of such in the deep-time paleoclimate record is extremely rare. We present an exceptionally well-preserved, millimeter-scale laminated marlstone from a succession precession-driven limestone-marlstone couplets deposited Western Interior Seaway (North America) immediately preceding and during Cretaceous mid-Cenomanian event (ca. 96.5 Ma). Sedimentological, geochemical, micropaleontological data indicate that individual pairs light-dark laminae alternations extent water-column mixing oxygenation. Principal component analysis X-ray fluorescence element counts grayscale scan continuous thin section through reveal with 80–100 yr, 200–230 350–500 ?1650 4843 yr periodicities. A substantial fraction indicates anoxic bottom water variation pronounced 10,784 cycle. The centennial millennial reminiscent those found Holocene total irradiance anoxia cycle may be manifestation semi-precession-influenced Tethyan oxygen minimum zone waters entering seaway.

Characterization of Millennial-Scale Climate Variability

The oxygen isotope time series from ice cores in central Greenland [the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and the Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP)] and West Antarctica (Byrd) provide a basis for evaluating the behavior of the climate system on millennial time scales. These time series have been invoked as evidence for mechanisms such as an interhemispheric climate seesaw or a stochastic re...

Abrupt mid-Holocene onset of centennial-scale climate variability on the Peru-Chile Margin

[1] Understanding the natural climate variations in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) is crucial for predicting the evolution of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Here we present the first continuous, decadal-resolution Holocene climate record from the Peru-Chile Margin, near the epicenter of the modern ENSO system. Geochemical proxies allow us to reconstruct sea surface temperature, ph...

Centennial-to-Millennial Hydrologic Trends and Variability Along the North Atlantic Coast, USA, During the Holocene

Geophysical and sedimentary records from five lakes in Massachusetts reveal regionally coherent hydrologic variability during the Holocene. All of the lakes have risen since ~9.0 ka, but multicentury droughts after 5.6 ka repeatedly lowered their water levels. Quantified water level histories from the three best-studied lakes share >70% of their reconstructed variance. Four prominent low-water ...
